Rudyard Kipling

Born this day in 1865, Rudyard Kipling, winner of the 1907 Nobel Prize for Literature, was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist remembered for his celebration of British imperialism and his stories for children.

1922: Union of Soviet Socialist Republics established

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, formed this day in 1922 with its capital in Moscow, eventually incorporated 15 republics and constituted (in area) the largest country in the world until its dissolution in 1991.
